Athena Wang was
born in Hebei Province, China with an art degree from Beijing Art Academy.
While attending the academy in the early 1990s, she studied under such
famous artists Gao Shisan, Pengpei Quan, Zhang Bu etc . From the beginning,
she was told she had a natural aptitude and profound understanding
of painting. Athena Wang is skilled in gong bi hua, a traditional
Chinese realistic painting characterized by fine-line work and
close attention to detail. Early on, Athena demonstrated exceptional
creativity
and talent in painting flowers, based on the ancient Chinese cultural
tradition. Having taken the flower painting to a new level, Athenan
established her reputation with her unique style among Chinese artists.
Her work demonstrates non-standard composition procedures and technique
and uses contrasts to perfection—the well-defined juxtaposed
against the vague, the hard complimenting the soft. Her versatile talents
also include calligraphy, seal-cutting (yinzhang), bronze
art, and oil painting. Her work has been shown in the United States,
France,
Japan, and Germany—at both international exhibitions and domestic
and foreign museums, as well as at the United Nations.
Her work has been published in two books, "The Painting Collection of
Wang Xiaoyan" and "Wang Xiaoyan Works Collection.".
